Heating

Manor Farm House is heated by an LPG-fired boiler serving wet underfloor heating in the extension and radiators in the original house. The two zones have separate controls. Domestic hot water is held in a large pre-heated tank, supplemented by the immersion heater when the diesel generator runs (the immersion is wired to the generator output, so a generator run produces hot water as a useful by-product). On sunny or windy days, surplus renewable generation can also be diverted to the immersion for effectively free hot water.

The boiler is on a HomeServe annual cover plan (£10/month at current rates), under which it is serviced annually and any breakdown work is included.

Running costs

Twenty years of detailed records show what the house actually costs to heat:

Average annual LPG consumption (2023–2026): 1,941 litres
Average annual cost at current prices: approximately £1,300

This covers all heating, all domestic hot water, and cooking — for a five-bedroom house in the middle of a Norfolk marsh. The figure compares favourably with mains-gas-heated equivalents, and is significantly less than oil-heated rural properties of similar size. Combined with the absence of any electricity bill, total household energy costs run at approximately £100 a month.
